ENTRANCE TO THE SEA – PORT OF ROTTERDAM, THE NETHERLANDS

Maasvlakte II is the biggest national civil engineering project of the Netherlands, since the Delta Works. Approximately 2.000 acres land is reclaimed from the sea , behind a 3 miles of embankment. The effect of this project on the Dutch coast would have its effect on marine nature and beach tourism. Part of the deal between the national government, environmental organisations and the Port of Rotterdam, in the economic need for expansion of the harbour facilities, included the realisation of ecological and landscape compensation for both nature and people.

Stijlgroep designed the entrance of this new dune landscape, with extraordinary parking lots, dune stairways towards the beach and colourful bollards to maintain orientation in this wide seashore landscape. The concrete staircase is an art object designed by Jan Konings.
