This week for us was a very important step in the process of the design of Valley 21. With the holidays still in some of our systems, we had our first virtual meeting between Bucharest, Vama Buzaului and Rotterdam to set our parameters. And of course then Murphy’s law applies in regard to technology. Nonetheless we had our meeting and how fruitful it was. Almost everybody was present. The BTF team, the GBC from Bucharest, and of course the mayor Tiberiu Chirilas, and Horia also joined us in a meeting to discuss the mutual goals and the planning for the next months. The last hour of the meeting for us as the design team was the perfect opportunity to guide you all ‘live’ through our though process that led towards the concept Masterplan and our approach towards architecture. Your genuine positive response was beautiful to receive for us all so thank you for that! It gave us so much energy that we made some big steps again in the process! But first let us share some of the information that we showed you in the presentation.
Based on the sketches of the Masterplan, we differentiated the landscape in regard to open fields and closed forest. The natural slope of the valley directs the way of occupation that leads to small ‘neighbourhoods’ in the open fields and more individual dwellings between the trees in the forest areas. By creating these small neighbourhoods we can combine the way of occupation of the landscape by tourism with the ongoing beauty of the landscape and still keep the sheppard and the sheep in the Valley. They will maintain the open areas of the valley, while the neighbourhoods will be rich with flowers and plants in the surrounding of the houses.
Like the trouts will return to the river, the dwellings will similarly settle themselves along the landscape. We split the volume of the house in two segments that divided the living areas and the sleeping areas, joint by a core. By using the movement of the swimming fish as a metaphor of the architecture volume, each house can be adjusted at the joint of both volumes so we can fit them in the location and alter the view as we like.
For the rental units we can use a similar approach but there the two volumes will be two rental units. Thus the scale of the houses in the valley will maintain similar, as will the architecture and appearance.
As a reference we showed you some great projects of architects we know, just to let you know what is in our mind. For us the show the right balance between the sculpture of the building, the honesty of the materials used and the right atmosphere on the inside, overlooking the Valley. A synergy of experience of luxury inside and the landscape outside. But also of innovative architecture combined with local craftsmanship and detail.
People like to choose. So let’s give them, within the scope of the landscape, the possibility to alter the architecture with the personal wishes they have. We made some sketches on the desired rooms and services future customers would want in their home. This led to three floorplan schemes, depending if the customer wants one, two or three bedrooms.
The Hospitality Center
How to get grip on the concept of a flexible and phasable HospitalityCenter? How to translate a warm welcome into a building? Our starting point was the warmth and hospitality we experienced ourselves by the people in Vama Buzaului. What better welcome than if we are able to translate the pastoral life and hospitality of the Village towards the Valley! A small agritouristic constellation of buildings around a multifunctional square, where you can find all you need and expect to find in the region, presented to you in small. Thus you will be experiencing a piece of the village of Vama Buzalui at the entrance of Valley 21. Let’s make use of the Romanian rural life as a treasure for tourist activities and educational example for a sustainable life. The concept of a collection of village-like buildings is highly flexible and multipurpose. We will look into this more the next week, but like to share this idea already now. In our mind the mental link between the valley and the village is made in this concept, as is the flexibility and strategy in growth and use. Welcome to Vama Buzaului. Welcome to Valley 21.
