Hernesse gardens, the best of both worlds!

Redefining the purpose and meaning of a park-like, but closed, care facility meant looking at the specific characteristics and history of the site. We chose for interaction of these two worlds. Working inside-out the assisted living facilities are located in the centre of the site. For patients who are able to function more independent a second ‘ring’ is formed which directly relates with normal housing.

The area is surrounded by a fringe of woods. These woods form a vital element within the landscape plan, they form the connecting elements with the new developments. In this park non-hierarchal interaction is created by a clear structure in combination with human scale and size. Providing a sense of security for the current care residents and an opportunity to naturally grow towards an indendence.
